Things to consider before your closing
Get a home inspection. Choose a qualified inspector to see if there are any problems with the house.
Negotiate repairs with seller Renegotiate the sales agreement if your home inspector or the appraiser uncovers new problems that are costly to repair.
Select an insurer Shop for the best rates. The lender won't issue the loan without your proof of insurance for the home.
Select a moving company Call several movers to find the best deal and schedule a preliminary date for your move.
Begin to pack You may want to hold a yard sale to raise extra cash and get rid of items that will clutter up your new home.
Review life-insurance coverage You may want to increase your coverage, especially if your family may have trouble meeting the new mortgage payment if you die unexpectedly.
Complete change-of-address cards Get the cards from the post office and fill them out, but don't mail them until you're certain of the date you'll close.
Call current utility companies Find out how to have the utilities turned off and any deposits returned, but don't set a disconnect date until closing week, to protect yourself against last-minute delays.
Call utility companies for new home Ask the seller which utility companies serve the new home, and contact a representative to have the accounts transferred into your name.
Reconsider expected closing date You may have to renegotiate a later closing date if the process takes more time than you and the seller expected.
